Looking back on the sustainability targets we set ourselves over two years ago, I am pleased to report we are on track. Here is an update:
50% of the server hosting we supply or commission will be powered by 100% renewable energy.
We are very pleased to report this target has been smashed. Measuring by disk space used, now more than 82% of the server hosting we supply or commission is powered by 100% renewable energy. The remaining 17.6% remains on a legacy platform that mitigates its carbon footprint by offsetting. If we measure by spend, 90% of our cloud server costs are today funding servers powered by 100% renewable energy.
We were already on track to meet our 50% goal in partnership with katapult.io, who have led the way in the UK with solar, wind and sea powered cloud infrastructure. Then after also approaching long-term cloud services supplier DigitalOcean to ask about the green credentials of their London Data Centre, they gave us this response on 16th May 2023:
Talking specifically about London region, please note that it is fully on renewable energy resources (100% green).
You can find detail about their energy consumption and efforts to utilize renewable energy sources here.
Data centers in NYC1, LON1, AMS2, AMS3, and SGP1 are fully green (100 percent renewable energy) right now. ”

There is still some leg work to do to decommission legacy platforms and ensure all our suppliers are 100% renewable, but we are bang on target to achieve this by 2025.
If you like to manage your own cloud, DigitalOcean are offering $200 free credit if you use our affiliate link. Katapult are also offering new customers £100 free credit.
Both these companies are highly recommended, they’ve been helping us to deliver a great service with a clear conscious for years now.
